What to Know Before Moving a Piano

Planning, protection and the tuning schedule that should follow.

Measure doorways, stairwells and turns before move day, and clear a straight path. Uprights are top-heavy and grands must have legs and lyre removed and the case placed on a padded skid board.

After the move, let the instrument sit for two to three weeks so it equilibrates to the new room before tuning. Moving alone rarely detunes a piano, but the new environment always does.
