How Long Does a Piano Last?
Realistic service life for strings, hammers, pinblocks and soundboards.
A well-built piano can serve 40 to 60 years before major work, and considerably longer with rebuilding. Strings lose brilliance after about 30 years, hammers wear by 15 to 25 years of regular play, and pinblocks eventually lose grip.
Maintenance history matters more than age. A 70-year-old piano tuned twice yearly in a stable room often outperforms a neglected 25-year-old instrument.
